A Step Forward

Synopsis

Two decades ago, a day in the life of a woman fishworker would begin before day break. Waking up, she would walk miles in order to reach the harbour by 6 am. Carrying her load in a wicker basket, she would proceed to the market to sell the fish and return home carrying another head load - of tubers, coconut and firewood - her family's dinner.

Selvaraji is a second generation fishworker from Kerala. Her life is not much different from her mother's. Construction of new harbours and modernisation of fishing craft has not changed anything in the lives of fish vendors like Selvaraji, who are struggling to survive in a market where they are visible, yet go unrecognised.

Confronted with problems of transportation, harassment, poor credit facility, poor infrastructure, women across fishing communities are getting together to find a voice. According to Selvaraji, "For me, vending fish is not just a matter of making some money. This is a profession where I have to keep going. I didn’t start to retire in three days, whether I have a loss or gain. I’ll do this till I die."

'A Step Forward' talks about the life of the women fishworkers in India and their quest for a sustainable fishery -- a fishery that nurtures not only the resource but also the livelihood of those that have depended on it for generations.
